Wearing Masks To The Gym - July Blog, By Chris Alexis
Positively Premier: Wearing Masks to the Gym
As the age of COVID continues, many people are worried about having to wear a mask while working out.
As always, we’re here to serve. And when it comes to masks, we want to offer some tips on how to best marry them with successful workouts.
Gary Fortney, the club’s head trainer, shared some tips.
“It’s definitely an adjustment while working out in a mask, so you want to prepare for your body for it,” he said. “My first suggestion is that to slow things down when working out in a mask. You’re not getting as much airflow as you normally would, and thusly big gulps of air aren’t going to happen as easily as you work harder.”
While slowing things down, also shorten your workouts. Do you normally go for 45 minutes on the recumbent bike? Try going for 20 instead and then adding back time in phases.
“Also think about the type of mask you want to wear while at the gym,” Fortney said. “A mask always offer protection, especially for the people around you, but keeping a thinner one on will help you breathe easier through it.”
Looking for more information about appropriate masks to wear while working out? Here’s an article from the TODAY show that should prove extremely helpful:

One more important point: As always, your well-being is our top priority. That’s why we exist in the first place — to help you reach your best, healthiest self. So please remember to consult your physician before you decide to do any activities while wearing a mask.
And if you have further questions about working out with a mask, be sure to ask one of our trainers or reach out to Gary at
